The catalytic converter must last at least 100,000 km. If this is not the case, the cause is mainly due to:

• External damage
• Clogging or contamination
• Oil/Antifreeze contamination
• overheating

For the above problems, the warranty does not cover the new catalytic converter! Eliminate the cause before installing a new catalytic converter! If this does not happen, the new catalytic converter will also quickly stop working. Read more about this under More information (catalysts) .

External damage

The ceramic material in the catalytic converter is made of light, thin-walled and brittle material. The insulating layer holds the material in place and provides some form of protection against external damage. Meanwhile, the ceramic material can break due to speed bumps and stones in the road, among other things. In addition, bad installation, bad exhaust mounting paste, and a broken exhaust system can also cause the ceramic material to break and/or crack.

Clogging and/or contamination of the catalytic converters can be caused by using the wrong fuel. The use of leaded or lead substituted fuels clogs the ceramic material and stops it from working. This also applies to fuel additives that are not suitable for systems with catalytic converters. Once oil or antifreeze enters the exhaust system, it can block air passage because a heavy soot layer builds up in the catalytic converter against the ceramic plates. This will block the air flow, resulting in clogging of the interior. This can cause power loss and engine overheating. This can cause leaking gaskets, worn piston rings or other damaged engine parts.

When excess fuel enters the exhaust system, it will burn when it reaches the catalytic converter. The result can be overheating and burning of precious metals. The catalytic converter loses its effectiveness and in severe cases, the ceramic part melts and the catalytic converter becomes clogged. Possible causes are incorrect fuel ratio, incorrect engine setting, rusted spark plugs, broken lambda sensors or malfunction.

Despite its sound absorbing properties, the catalytic converter should not be labeled as a sound absorber. A clicking and/or whistling sound can occur when there is excess fuel in the catalytic converter, which burns the insulating protective layer.

A catalytic converter can only function properly if combustion is carried out to factory specification. If not used correctly, the catalyst can be completely lost (fusion of the monolith). All possible causes must be eliminated before installing a new catalytic converter.

Minimum checklist:

• Check and/or replace oil filter
• Check and/or replace air filter
• Check and/or replace spark plug
• Check engine management
• check the turbo
• Check LPG installation (if applicable)
• Check oil consumption
• Check coolant consumption
• Check for leaks at the cylinder head gasket
• Check the exhaust gas mixture
• Check the quality and capacity of the (pre)catalyst
• Check all sensors (lambda sensors)
• Check EGR valves and system

Additionally, you should test the following:

• injectors
• Busy
• starter and battery
• Emissions test

Do not use gaskets in front of the catalytic converter and always make sure the correct oil is used. It is highly recommended to change the oil when replacing the catalytic converter.

Only when all the conditions of the minimum checklist are met can the catalytic converter do its job properly.
